Hello.(please.excuse.my.broken.spacebar)
I.have.been.researching.the.following.lines.separately.
through.the.usual.means.of.primary.records.and
.secondary.records.(ie,.books,.family.histories),.
of.which.there.are.alot.for.these.familes...
I.finally.found.a.great.deal.of.other.information.
through.Culpepper.sites.(family.or.county.I'm.
not.sure).and.was.wondering.if.any.of.you.could.
help.me.confirm.(or.otherwise).what.I.have.found.
I.will.now.just.insert.what.I.posted.on.VA-Southside.today.
I.have.information.to.share.on.the.Sheltons.
Janet.Hunter,.Alexandria.VA
I have the following information re my Mary Polly Cooper who married John
Waller (s/o George Waller and Anne Winston Carr). Since they are in a wide
variety of counties I am posting to both the VAAlbema and VA-Southside lists.
Surnames I am particularly interested in meeting researchers because they are
new to me and I have little information: Alexander, Walker, Johnson, Clark,
Anthony, Cooper, Kelly, Hart, Gordon, Moorman, Bolling??
I suppose it was inevitable I would find more Quaker ancestors. I have ran
across the above lines in researching the wives of ancestors of my
Pittsylvania County Sheltons. Fortunately for me there weren't many outsiders
welcomed into this family that favored first and second cousins as spouses.
I am wondering if any of you are researching these lines which I have been
following for some time, and particularly any details of their Quaker
affiliation. I know there are some controversies here regarding parentage, so
feel free to comment. I didn't realize the Quaker connection until I looked
at Culpepper VA Genweb.
I have Royalist Dr. Arthur JOHNSTON/JOHNSON, one of King CharlesII physicians,
who with his possible wife Barbara GORDON and children leaves Aberdeen when
seized by the Covenanters to live with married daughter in Oxford, England.
His son Edward Johnson (apparently converted to Quakerism in England?) marries
at age 39 in 1677 Elizabeth WALKER, daughter of Alexander Walker, shortly
after his arrival in New Kent Co VA, ca 1677. Alexander Walker, who travelled
with Edward Johnson, had been excommunicated for being a Quaker. With
Walkers and Johnsons was William EDMUNSON, one of the fathers of NC Quakers.
Edward Johnson and Elizabeth Walker are believed to be the parents of
Penelope Johnson who married Capt.Christopher CLARKE (b. 1681, Nansemond VA,
d. 1754, Louisa Co VA), son of Micajah Clark and Sallie Anne MOORMAN.
However, some records show this Christopher Clarke to have married Penelope
BOLLING. Of course, there is a tendency to favor the Bolling marriage because
then you get to claim Pocohontas and other lines.
Also, William and George Rogers Clark, famous expeditioners, etc.,.also are
claimed by this Clark family, which goes many lines beyond Micajah that I
haven't started to digest. This Christopher Clarke, according to the Penelope
Johnson camp, was said to have joined the Quakers later, in the 1740s. ?? He
is also said to have patented land in 1722 with one Nicholas Meriwether in
Hanover, where Clark was a tobacco planter, militia captain and justice of the
peace. They were large landowners in Hanover, Albemarle and Louisa Cos.
I am particularly interested in whether any of you are familiar with this
Clark controversy? Did Christopher Clarke marry Penelope Bolling or Penelope
Johnson?
>From this point, in brief the descendancy is:
Elizabeth Clark m. Joseph ANTHONY, Sr. b. 1713, d. 1785 Henrico Co VA. He
was the son of Mark Anthony, b. Holland, and Isabella HART, b. Surry VA.
Sarah Anthony b. 1742, Henrico Co VA, m. Captain Thomas C. COOPER, SR. b.
Frederick Co. VA 1733, d. 1798, Hancock Co GA. Thomas C. Cooper was the son
of Benjamin Cooper, b. Philadelphia PA 1701, d. Loudon Co VA, 1776, and
Elizabeth KELLY. They were married in Christ Church, Philadelphia 1720.
Then Mary Polly Cooper married John WALLER (s/o George Waller II and Anne
Winston CARR).
Mary Polly WALLER m. Crispin Robertson SHELTON (s/o Vincent Shelton and
Susannah ROBERTSON, d/o Henry Robertson (1708-1782)& Susannah
Amelia>Pittsylvania
Co)...He.was.the.son.of.Christopher.Robertson.d.1749.and.wife.Sarah(Ann).
Their daughter, Nancy Clark Shelton, married Moses Hurt SHELTON (grandson of
two of Vincent's brothers, Gabriel and Beverly. The brothers were just some
of the sons of Crispin Shelton and Letitia BUFORD.)
Nancy Clark and Moses Hurt Shelton move to Knox Co KY for a few years in
1820s-1830, then on to Lawrence Co MO.
Any information, corrections, etc. about these lines would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Janet Hunter
