In our family there are those who have collected records (land records in particular)
which refer to a John Asher and in some cases he is called Ashley. John had a son named
William, a son named Charles, a son named John Jr. who left a will (as John Asher) and a
daughter named Diana. Since early Culpeper records are difficult to obtain it is
possible that the Ashley family and the Asher family were different, but since my William
is often referred to in other locations as Ashert or Ashurst and at other times as Asher,
it is entirely possible that he was referred to as Ashley also. I do not have that he
married a Browning, and the information that I do have is confusing and difficult to
prove at all at this point, but I could share what I do have with you.
John Asher Jr. left a will which mentions two sons named William. John Asher Sr. had a
son named William who was "christened at Christ Church in Middlesex County, Virginia.
(Parish Register, Christ Church, Middlesex
County, Virginia, 1653-1812, Library of College of William and Mary)
i Diana, bap. Mar 2, 1706/7
ii William, bap. Sep 18, 1709
* iii John, b. ca. 1720, m. 1st, Nellie -- ca. 1738; 2nd, Elizabeth Coosenbury, d.
before Jun 18,
1798
iv Charles"
(The above quote was sent to me by an Asher researcher by the name of Larry Cornwell).
It is from a document called "John Asher ca 1661"
I will be happy to share his information with you if you have the ability to read a
Microsoft Works file.
I don't feel comfortable sharing his data with the whole list without his permission, but
the document does mention a John Ashley (which I guess he assumes is the same person as
John Asher) in connection with a Francis Browning.
Since I am trying to sort out the Asher family I would be very interested in what you
have. Some researchers claim that one of John Jrs. children married an Anne Bartlett and
moved to Kentucky.
My particular family isn't sure if we descend from the John's of Culpeper or a Robert
Ashurt of another place in VA
The three Williams are quite a puzzle to me. I am looking for my William who married a
Peggy Blevins. He is said by some to be the son of another William who possibly could be
the son of John Sr. Asher of Culpeper.
My William moved to Tennessee and his descendants (some of them) moved into Kentucky.
Whatever we can do as a group to sort out this mess would help. Determining if William
Ashley and William Asher or John Ashley and John Asher are two different people or the
same person would help as well.
