I found a John D. Smith on my 1850 Virginia Census CD
It states:
John D. Smith age 46 male Occupation: Planter Real Estate $3000. Born in
Charolette. His whole family was born in Charolette. The following is listed
living with him in his house:
Frances age 40 born in Campbell
Thomas 24 Planter born in Charolette
James 19 Planter " "
John 17 " "
Sallie 12 " "
Bettie 10 " "
Ann 8 " "
Andrew or Andrius Age 5 " "
I found a Octavia Davis listed living at the Ferrall Academy, with the
teacher listed as John B. Tinsley. Octavia Davis was born in Campbell,
Virginia. Her age was listed as 16.
