Subject: [VACULPEP] 1885 Culpeper Religious Movement?

Does anyone know what religious movement was at work in Culpeper County in
1885, causing existing churches to fear the loss of members?

I found an 1885 religious petition expressing alarm at "discovering a
quantity of printed bills scattered in this state relative to religion,
which we humbly presume is intended for the consideration of the people at
large." The petition goes on to propose state support for the existing
churches: The Antient Established (Episcopalian?), Luthern, Calvern
(Presbyterian?), Anabaptist, Methodist & Quaker churches. Finally, the
petition proposes that "no person hereafter except those already in Holy
Orders do presume to preach, teach, or Exhort until he be examined by seven
Clergymen. . ."

Does anyone know what this threatening religious movement was?

P.S. This is evidence that our founders did not desire separation of church
and state. They simply wanted freedom from English rule in the form of
church goverment.
