Dear Listers:

In the pension application file for James P. Kilby (File #9443, Tennessee
State Archives & Library, Nashville, TN) is a letter from W. P. Hill of
Culpeper, Virginia. It is written on letterhead of "The Culpeper Land Co."
and dated 26 January 1907, addressed to James P. Kilby, Esq. of Nashville,
TN. It reads:

"Dear Sir: Yours 12 inst. was handed me by the Postmaster here. I will
answer as near as I can. In the first place I wish to say that I was with
you in the same regiment but belonged to Co. "C" (Strother) and I expect you
will remember it. There were [xxx] three of my name in my Co. [1] Dick who
was [xxxx] for [xxxxx], and killed in the Valley. [2] Polk was wounded lost
his arm at Haines Shop, I think and [3] Willie (myself) was badly shot at
Fisher's Hill in the Valley. Now to answer your inquiries. Captain Billy
Hill died about two years ago in Madison County near Locust Dale, he
commanded Co. "D" (yours) 4th Va Cavalry. There is no post office at
Eldorado nor Stone House mountain but Cordova & Norman take the places and a
letter addressed to the latter will reach that neighborhood. This is a post
office at Griffinsburg.

Mrs. Caroline Kilby, address, Norman, VA she is the widow of Frank Kilby
[father of James P. Kilby]. Amos Kilby gave me this information. I have
John Holtzman your address and he told me he would write you.

In conclusion let me say that I was glad to hear from you and know that you
still live, the old fellows are dropping off one by one and soon we will all
be gone and we ought to keep in touch as much as we can. I hope you are
doing well and wish you long live and prosperity, we are in the 60's now in
age and whilst we are in touch with each other, we ought to be in closer
touch with the Master, and with the best wishes for you and yours, I am, Very
Truly

Your Comrade & Friend,
W. P. Hill
