Martha Dandridge Ball first wife of Jonathan Catlett Gibson, of Culpeper, and
buried in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church yard, She was the daughter of Col.
Burgess Ball.
Her two daughters were Frances Ann and Martha Dandridge Gibson. Col. Gibson's
second wife was Mary Williams Shackleford.

Frances Ann Gibson married J.C. Burt having Anna, who married Aylette Hawes
Buckner who lived in Rappahannock County.

2nd. wife Mary Shackleford6, (Lucy5 (Tutt), Elizabeth4, Nathaniel3, Henry2,
Phillip1).
married Col. Jonathan Catlett Gibson; issue: 1. Mary Catlett7 married Milton
Fitzhugh, and had Milton Catlett Fitzhugh, of California; 2. Lucy Ellen7
married John Strother Buckner (see below); 3. Ann Eustace7, married James B.
Welch of Ala., died leaving Leila8 married A.H. Davis, Eustace married
Sally Berry, Susan married James Leisure and Thomas; 4. Wm. St. Pierre7,
Lieut. Cav. C.S.A. killed at Westminster; 5. Jonathan Catlett7, (enlisted as
a private in the Culpeper Minute Men. Was rapidly promoted and became
Colonel of the 49th. Virginia Infantry, succeeding Col. Wm. ("Extra Billy")
Smith. Represented Culpeper county in the Virginia House of Delegates for a
number of terms), married Mary G. Shackleford, and had Edwin H.8, died
single; 6. Mildred Williams7, died young; 9. Eustace7 married Mattie Lacklin,
and had Pierre, Howard and Lee. Rrepresented the Huntingdon, W. Va. district
in the House of Delegates, being Speaker, and also in the U.S. House of
Representatives for two terms; 10. Edwin7 died single.


E. Conway married Elizabeth Thompson. Their son Francis, near Port Royal,
Caroline, married Rebecca, daughter of John Catlett and Elizabeth Grimes.
(This John Catlett was son of the John Catlett killed by the Indians while
defending the fort at Port Royal.) Nelly, daughter of Francis and
granddaughter of Edwin Conway, married James Madison, Sr., and was the mother
of President Madison, who was born at Port Conway, opposite to Port Royal,
where his mother was visiting, at 12 o'clock at night between the 5th and 6th
of March, 1751, and was baptized the 31st of March by the Rev. Wm. Davis, and
had for godfathers John Moore and Jonathan Gibson, and godmothers Mrs.
Rebecca Moore and Misses Judith and Elizabeth Catlett. (Source: Notes on

4.Eugenie8 who married W.I. Winfield, of North Carolina and had John Buckner9
, Edith Spottswood9, Courtlandt Scott9, Gladys Gibson9, Richard Marshall9 and
William Meade9; 5. Blanche St. Pierre8 who married John E. Dove, and had
Lucile Buckner9.
