Message Board Post:

There may or may not be any connection in your particular case, but we have recently determined (with the help of DNA testing on living male Browns) that a Brown family in the Petersburg Co., VA area was very closely "blood related" to a Brown family in the Culpeper Co., VA area. This overall Brown family has been traced back to Essex Co., VA in the late-1600s (and possibly Lancaster Co., VA....the part that eventually became Middlesex Co., VA....before that).

There was a Francis Brown who died in Essex Co., VA in 1691/1692 (he MAY have been a son of an earlier Francis Brown who died in the Lancaster/Middlesex Co., VA area in the 1650s), and some of his descendants migrated from Essex Co., VA to the Culpeper Co., VA area around the mid-1720s (that area was actually in Spotsylvania Co., VA at the time, and then later it was in Orange Co., VA, before Culpeper Co., VA was finally created from Orange Co., VA). This branch of the family included a Daniel Brown who was married to an Elizabeth Coleman and who had a large family; this Daniel Brown died in Orange Co., VA in 1747, as I recall.

There were several men named Francis Brown in the above overall family in Essex Co., VA, and the parents of one of those Francis Browns (one who was born about 1700) have not been proven. This "mystery" Francis Brown had several children, and one of them was a Hezekiah Brown who was married to a Sally Unknown (per some land deeds in Essex). This Hezekiah Brown moved from Essex to Amelia Co., VA in the mid-1700s (per a land deed), and it appears that it was his son, who was also named Hezekiah Brown, who married a Tabitha Irby in "next-door" Dinwiddie Co., VA in 1784, as I recall. This last couple were the apparent parents of Irby Brown, and Irby Brown married Rebecca Bonner Eppes. This last family and some of their relatives/descendants lived in the Petersburg Co., VA area for many years (which is near to Dinwiddie Co., VA).

Note: There were some other male Browns who were also associated with the Dinwiddie Co., VA area in the late-1700s, and it appears that they COULD have been additional sons of the older Hezekiah Brown who was married to Sally Unknown. These included a James Brown and a Dudley Brown, as I recall.

DNA from a living male Brown in the branch of the Brown family that went to the Culpeper Co., VA area, as well as DNA from a living male Brown in the branch of the Brown family that was in Petersburg, VA, closely "match." I suspect that the above-mentioned "mystery" Francis Brown (born about 1700) was out of an "unknown/unproven" brother or other close relative of the Francis Brown who died in Essex Co., VA in 1691/1692. In that regard, there was a "mytery" Thomas Brown who was a witness on the Essex Co., VA will in the early-1700s for a son of the Francis Brown who died in 1691/1692 (that son was also named Francis Brown), so MAYBE this "mystery" Thomas Brown was the father of the "mystery" Francis Brown who was born about 1700 (and one of the other sons of this "mystery" Francis Brown was named Thomas Brown....so that certainly "fits" the above possible scenario). Other sons of the "mystery" Francis Brown were Francis (of course), Daniel (a familiar name in this overall!
Brown family) and Linard (maybe actually "Leonard?"). The "mystery" Francis Brown died in Chesterfield Co., VA around 1756, and his will confirms the above names of his sons.
