Joan,
Marion is the county seat for Smyth County, VA. I am not aware of any county
named Marion. Smyth Co is bounded by Washington Co, Russell Co, Tazewell Co,
Wythe Co and Grayson Co in the southwestern part of the state, ssw of Bluefield
WV. I don't know when Smyth Co came into being, but perhaps another look at
usgen web at those counties could help you. Badck in 1860 the area may have been
called Marion Co for census purposes. Can anyone else help?
