Hi everyone,
Today I was down at the National Archives in DC, and had a look at the
1870 and 1880 Agricultural Census listings for Fairfax Co. Besides the
regular census, they also did special counts of industries and farms in
1850, 60, 70 and 80.
I discovered the entries for my James H. Clark, and it shows a lot of
info about the family farm: acres of woodlands, acres of cultivated
lands, number of horses, cows, swine, orchards, amount of honey, wine,
or butter produced, value of land, etc. There's no statistics about
people, but these census' are great for getting the feel of the farm,
and for fleshing out the family history. I imagine this is a frequently
overlooked source.
