I have the 1760 Interpretive Map by Beth Mitchell and am trying to
correlate the names of the 3 islands in the Potomac with a more recent
map.
A 1731 court record places my family member as a tenant on Alexander's
Island (line of Gerrard ALEXANDER) above 4 Mile Run. That indicates to
me that he lived either on what was labeled Holmes Island (where
Washington Natl Airport now sits) or Mason's Island on the 1760 Map. I
think Mason's is where the Jefferson Memorial is today, isn't it?
I have the book "Fairfax Co. VA, a History" by Nan Netherton et al,
1992, but can't find my answer therein.
Can anyone tell me which island was called Alexander's Island at one
time?
Thanks for any help,
