PRESIDENTIAL PRAYER REQUESTS FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 10, 2002

This week marks six months since the terror attacks in New York,
Pennsylvania and Washington, DC. Let us give thanks to God for the unity of
spirit and the determination Americans have shown in the face of this
unthinkable new chapter in our history. Let us also use this occasion to
redouble our efforts to uphold our President and our nation in prayer.

The fighting in Afghanistan has escalated in recent days, and additional
troops have been sent in. It is as important as ever that we pray for our
soldiers, pilots and support personnel. They are dealing with increased
numbers of hostile troops engaging them in battle in rugged mountainous
terrain and unforgiving winter conditions. Pray for their safety, and that
all air and ground vehicles will function safely and well, and that there
will be no further loss of life. Pray also for the leaders of Operation
Enduring Freedom, that they will have God's wisdom in every decision.

Pray also for the burden, especially close to the President's heart, of
those who have lost loved ones. Pray that they would experience comfort
from the hand of God, and that they would sense the prayers of the nation on
their behalf. Pray that they would find solace in knowing that their loved
ones made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, having given their lives
for the all-important cause of freedom. (See the President's comments
below.)

As always, the President values and appreciates our prayers for wisdom and
clarity of thought for him as he leads our nation.

FOUNDATIONS OF FAITH
Was our nation founded on faith in God? Consider the witness of the Supreme
Court Building, completed in 1932. Today, as the Justices enter the eastern
portal of the building, they pass beneath a huge relief sculpture. The
focal point of that sculpture is the image of Moses, holding the Ten
Commandments. Hermon MacNeil, the architect chosen for designing this
portal, ensured that our highest court in the land was yet another visible
example of our nation's godly heritage. Just 40 years earlier, the Supreme
Court determined, "Religion, morality, and knowledge are necessary to good
government, the preservation of liberty, and the happiness of mankind."
