Subject: [VAFairfa] Column Headings needed 1820 Census
Date: Sat, 9 Mar 2002 07:24:57 EST
Hello,
Reading 1820 census of Fairfax County through "Images online" at
Ancestry.com. The pages do not show column headings at any place so I have
printed out the 1820 form to use as a guide. My dilemma is that the columns
headings do not match the original census records.
The 1820 census (original) shows 23 columns across
The first (6) free white males (per printed form)
1. under 10
2. under 16
3. 16-18
4. 18-28
5. 28-45
6. 45 and over
Repeated (next 7-12) for white females (per printed form)
This seems to agree.
Next and beginning at column 13 and through to 23, it differs. Could someone
offer the proper column headings in order. This is the section that lists
"slave" ages and gender and also free colored, along with number engaged in
agriculture or other business. Any reference will be greatly appreciated.
Anne
