I am having a very difficult time in sorting out the lineages of the Ward and

According to histories of Burke, Virginia Lord Fairfax made grants to Henry
Ward and Francis Coffer as two of the original land owners of Burke. The land
Henry Ward owned is part of the Woods Community Center there today. Henry
Ward built the first house in Burke. I have been unable to find these grants.

There is supposedly a deed made from Elizabeth Ward [wife of Henry Ward] to
William Kitchen as her son-in-law in 1752 of 53 acres Pohick Run in Fairfax
County. There was also 53 acres of the adjacent land given to Margaret Ward
by her father as her dower previously. I have not been able to locate these
deeds either.

These records show up in the Fairfax records concerning William Kitchen:

Fairfax Deed Book K, pages127-129:

This indenture made the 19th day of October 1772 between WILLIAM KITCHEN of
Fairfax County Planter of the one part and MARY FERGUSON of the said County
widow of the other part Whereas GEORGE MASON Gent. on the first day of
October 1757 by his indenture of that date did grant lease and to farm let
unto the said WILLIAM KITCHEN a certain parcel of land containing one hundred
acres situate in the County of Fairfax for and during the lives therein
mentioned and under the rents and covenants therein stipulated as by the
lease duly recorded among the records of the County Court of Fairfax may
appear Now This indenture witnesseth that WILLIAM KITCHEN for the sum seventy
pounds to him paid by the said Mary and by and with the free will and consent
of GEORGE MASON hath sold MARY FERGUSON one hundred acres of land mentioned
in the said lease together with the lease itself to have and to hold for all
the time yet to come and unexpired in the said lease under the rents and
covenants therein contained....
Presence W. Ellzey William Kitchen

This is to certify that I have agreed and consented that William Kitchen of
Fairfax County may sell and make over to Mary Ferguson (balance missing)....

Mary Ferguson was the wife of Thomas Withers Coffer.

William Kitchen is named in the will of John Ferguson [father of Mary
Ferguson Coffer] in 1760:

Rent Rolls for 1761 and 1774 by J. Estelle Stewart King, Genealogical
Publishing Company, 1996:

Farguson, John

Of Truro Parish. To grandson, Josiah Farguson, only son of my eldest son John
Farguson, land in King and Queen Co., which was bequeathed by my father to be
equally divided between my three brothers - James, Joshua and Joseph - as
tenants for life and not to their heirs forever. I became entitled to
reversion of same as eldest son and heir of my father as two of my brothers
have been dead for several years. Legatees: son Joshua and daughter Mary
Coffer, William Peake, Bailey Kitchen and William Kitchen (friends). Exr: son
Joshua. Wit: Charles Green, Robert Lindsay and Margaret Green.

The will of Mary Coffer of Prince William County, VA in 1741:
1741--Truro Parish, Prince William County, VA. Will of Mary Coffer, dated 3
Jan 1741. Mary Coffer to my son Francis Coffer all that tract of land lying
in the forest of Pohick containing three hundred and seventy-eight acres
joining land of Henry Ward on the north run of Pohick, which land was entered
by his father Francis Coffer before his death and hath been by me
+ since cleared out of the office and the deed for the same made out in my
said sons name. Witnesses: John Farguson, Jeremiah Bronough and William Puke.
Will also mentions Mary More [Moore] daughter of William More. Rest of estate
divided between sons Thomas Withers Coffer and Francis Coffer and daughter
Ann Farguson. Also mentioned in will are John Sturman, William Sturman and
John Withers.

Mary Littlejohn Withers Coffer was a widow when she married Francis Coffer.
She is named in her father's, Oliver Littlejohn, will.

The name of Jeremiah Bronough appears as a witness to her will and he was
also from Charles County, Maryland.

John Coffer the original immigrant was transported to Westmoreland County,
Virginia before May 14, 1660, by Nathaniel Pope. He removed to Charles
County, Maryland before Nov. 25, 1663 when his son John was born there to
John and Sarah Coffer.
They also had a son Thomas Coffer born Aug. 15, 1667 and Francis born in
1672.

More to Come.
