Mosquitoes are attracted by the carbon dioxide we exhale, not Lemon Joy
or white plates. The adults (the ones that do the biting) don't drink
water. I suppose if a mosquito happens to fall into the dish, it will
drown, so a few might die that way. If you want to sit outside in the
evening, try the OFF lanterns -- they give off a chemical that disguises
our carbon dioxide, and also make an attractive sight on the patio.

And now, could we get back to genealogy? ;-)
