The Library of Virginia has Personal Property Tax Lists for the counties
of Virginia available through their Interlibrary Loan service. They
charge nothing for this two week loan, but your local library may.

A list of counties and available personal property tax films is at:

It should be realized that these particular lists were the fourth copy
made of the originals. This copy was sent to the state auditor in
Richmond and may have contained only those entries that were needed to
verify the state tax requirements. Some commissioners may have omitted
those households where there were tithable males but did not own
property that was state taxable. [Note: this was found to have been done
by one of the commissioners for the Loudoun Co PPT Lists.] I do not
know about Fauquier Co, but Loudoun Co has only a few years of the
original county lists still in existence. Each book was in general
alphabetical order by letter category. Some commissioners listed the
names of all the tithable males in the household, while others only
listed the head of household responsible for paying the tax.
