Phyllis;
All of the extant PPTLs for Virginia Counties are available on microfilm through any Morman Family History Center (look in your phone book under Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and find the nearest one with a FHC). Here in the Washington, DC are there is one in Annandale, VA and one in Kensington, MD, at least. The microfilms can be "rented" for a nominal fee... I have about 30 counties, including Fauquier, on "permanent" loan at the Kensington FHC - I am extracting all the BARTLETTs and descendants of Thomas BARTLETT c1730-1806 who live in Fauquier Co, VA 1769-1785, before moving to Harrison Co, VA. Loudoun Co, VA is the only county that is not there (to my knowledge). There is a LOT of info to be gleaned from these lists: when a man turned 16 or 21 (depends on the county or year as to when they started being listed) they were added to the PPTL; usually when a man died the following year had: Thomas Bartlett Est or Heirs; and often his widow was listed aft!
er that; sometimes remarks distinguished between two men as in: Thos Bartlett of Jas and Thos Bartlett of Ten Mile (a creek in Harrison Co); and of course if folks moved around, the last year of the PPTL listing gives a pretty good indication of when they moved. The PPTL also gives a sometimes humorous lesson in spelling - in successive years: Garner Bartlett; Garnet Bartley; Gardner Berkley; Gardener Barkely; etc.
Good luck;
Jim Bartlett

Subject: [VAFAUQUI] Fauquier County Virginia Personal Tax lists
Hello List
Recently, I was pleased to find important information provided by Phyllis
Scott on the Fauquier Web Page regarding Fauquier County VA Personal
Property Tax lists. I was very interested to learn from her writing that
there are 3 tax lists for each year from 1782-1850. I have information that
my Joseph Duncan and his sons were on tax lists in the years 1792-1800. I
am interested in copying the lists of those years, particularly the years
1797 and 1798.
Would someone provide me with the information regarding the location of the
lists and how I could access them. Ms. Scott mentioned that tax lists were
available on microfilm at the library in Warrenton, Virginia. Would that be
all the tax lists 1792-1800? If that is correct, does anyone have a link to
that library. Also, besides the Warrenton Library, is there any other
source for the tax lists?
Thank you for your consideration,
Phyllis Grizzell Waddell
