"Chinky pins" can be found in Mercer Co., WV, but, are not as plentiful as when this old guy was a kid. They were still
in abundance all over the area of Montcalm post WW2. Picking time was always right around school starting time, Sept
one. The Chestnut trees were killed by the "blight" in the 1930's. The chinky pin is related to the dwarf chestnut
which is in the Beech family. Used to make a "picker" out of a Carnation Milk can with a bag attached, so we wouldn't
get our fingers damaged. As you drive in some areas, observe that folks have them for sale beside the road. The
encroachment of housing areas has done in some of the bushes. Now, consider this(and there may be other conclusions),
many nuts, fruits, berries, vines, flowers, etc. have died off and no longer exist, ---since people of this area quit
using coal for cooking and heating. The humming birds are returning. Bears, rattlesnakes, and other animals have been
reintroduced in my home area.
You all take care. If I had a wooden nickel, as a kid, I would have felt rich.
