Well, I joined the list a few days ago, and it's been quiet, so
I'll jump in here:
I am digging deeper on my research of Israel FRIEND (1693-1750)
who lived along the Potomac River in the early 1720's, both on the
Va. side and the Md. side. By 1725 he was commissioned by the Md.
Governor as an indian trader and ambassador, and was maried to
Sarah (aka Bokavar) and having babies.
I would really like to be able to flesh out those early years better.
I suspect that he was the first white who lived in that area (I don't
begin
finding neighbors till the early 1730's). How many Indians were living
there at that time? People have proposed other tribes, but I believe
they
were Shawnee. (Some have even said they were Chippewa, but that tribe
lived on the northern great lakes!)
Descendants on different lines tell about his widow Sarah (Bokavar)
remarrying after his death to John Valentine HOUSE (also an Indian
trader),
but that she was dissatisfied with the whites, and she "went west" with
the Indians, taking a son with her. He returned later to live with his
father.

Israel moved around a lot, and I know I am not even close to having all
the
deeds, tax lists, etc., where he is found. Could we all share our
tidbits,
and piece this puzzle together? I know he built a furnace, and a mill, in

Md., but I have yet to find deeds for that land. I know he must appear
on
more Va. records than the few that I've found so far. He lived on the
Va. side
of the Potomac above the Shenandoah river in the 1730's and 1740's.

Some have claimed that Israel's son Charles was born just before the
father's death...and have alternately claimed that Charles died as a
youngster.
However, It can be proved that Charles was married circa 1750, and
also Charles was party to a lengthy lawsuit in 1796-1805 regarding the
Va. land along the Potomac that Israel had left to him.
