Mike,
Were your Painters from lancaster Co., Pa before Va? My family was from Leonhard Bender, born 1705, married Maria Margaret Baer in 1725 & settled in Pa. Some, if not all, of the next generation family changed the name to Painter & moved on to Va. & NC.
