Don't know if this is the same man (or maybe a
descendant?), but he might deserve further
research:

Appalachian Virginia, 1776-1927
Dayton, Va.: Shenandoah Press, 1927
States that rifle shown in picture was used by
Philip Greever to fire the first gun and shoot a
Tory at the Battle of King's Mountain on Oct. 7,
1780. Rifle now [1927?] owned by Mrs. E. L.
Greever, a direct descendant who nows live the
farm where Philip lived and died at Chilhowie,
Smyth Co., VA.
She is the dau of Gen. James S. Greever and wife
of E. L. Greeever, also a direct descendant. (It
then goes on about a Capt. Greever of the Civil
War.)
Perhaps the rifle story can be checked out at
King's Mountain sites or in books on the battle.
