One fairly easy way to sort this out is to review the Personal Property
Tax Lists. A PPTL was made every year from 1782 to 1850, and it list each
male tithable (over 16 in most years) in the county each year. If David
FERREL was in Botetourt Co around 1822, he should be listed; same for
Frederick Co 18n 1817. I have tracked several BARTLETTs from Berkeley and
Frederick Co to Botetourt, Montgomery and Floyd Co - they were listed in
Berkeley Co for a few years, then Frederick, then Montgomery, where their
sons started being listed (as they became 16), and then in 1831 on the Floyd
Co PPTL. When a man died, the next year often had is name with the word
"Estate" listed after the name - sometimes for several years, while the
estate was sorted out. Often the widow was listed on the PPTL, and then she
paid the tax for her sons as they became 16. The PPTL for all VA counties
is available on microfilm through any LDS Family History Center.

Hi,

I am looking into something, but doubt it at this point:

In Botetourt County, VA, on February 23, 1822, I have my wife's
ancestor, David FERREL being married to Elizabeth SMITH, d/o
Jacob & Elizabeth "Betsey" STEBAR.

Now LDS Online shows another David of about the same time period
and in Virginia:

David FERREL m. Mary SMITH October 17, 1817 Frederick, VA.

I am wondering (assuming this couple really existed) if this could
be the same fellow marrying, first, the *sister* of Elizabeth SMITH,
namely Mary SMITH. As I say, I doubt it. But I have run across
this kind of thing before, of course, and so do not wish to dismiss
it. Also - if true - it tells me of another place David FERREL
likely lived *before* Botetourt.

Can anyone on this list tell me anything about this?
