Land changed hands between family members through inheritance and marriage
dowers. Also land was often taken away from an owner if it was not developed
as required in the original land patent. A person could also gain land after
a political coup, such as after Bacon's Rebellion. This particular area of
Garden Creek had (has) families that have inter-married for many
generations, and land was "swapped" at times, between these families. You
would have to trace the exact land plot back. Politics changed the county
lines and small areas in these counties would change their names too. Many
of the original surveys were later disputed as they were recorded with
bounded by a certain tree, which was no longer there. Creeks also change
their course over time.
