Still without power/using other computer....

The "Lee Tree" or "Heritage Tree" as it was also referred to, was a white oak. Last year a huge portion fell in Sept, and I personally along with a handful of others, went out & cut the wood up as much as we could and hauled the brush away & a rep from the APVA had the wood hauled to a storage facility in Ashland so the wood could be used as a fundraiser. I gathered up 10 children (boy scouts included) and we collected several bags of acorns for a fundraiser to grow "Little Lee Trees" and the same rep. from the APVA was going to work this out w/the Dept. of Forestry. A couple of months ago I learned that these acorns were never handed over to the Dept. for this project. I was very upset to learn this, especially after paying $10 a month for the Lee Tree website for one year ...which I have since taken down. We (myself and other volunteers) were doing all of this to aid the elderly couple living at this home and to raise additional funds to preserve the tree. (Several thousa!
nd dollars were collected years ago to stablize the tree and these funds are still being held by the APVA rep.)
To date...no funds have been given to the family for the tree in any capacity whatsoever. Neither the Hanover Historical Society nor the Hanover Historical Commission have been involved, to my knowledge, in anyway whatsoever with collecting funds or any of these fundraising attempts. I can definitely say that no one representing either of these groups came out to gather acorns or cut away tree limbs & haul debris.

It's been very sad (and frustrating) to see SO many efforts over such a LONG period of time by SO many people ending this way....with the tree being down/gone.

How sad that this mighty tree has finally fallen. I love the idea that
portions might be sold to support the historical society. Wasn't this
tree an oak? Were there viable acorns that might be sprouted? It would
be so neat to plant a seedling from this tree on or near graves of
confederate veterans.
