The house was torn down.
My intentions to photograph it never got me past intentions :(
There was a long driveway w/trees. It its later years it looked like a
haunted house. I think someone salvaged the wood & fireplace mantles.
The grave you mention came up when the school was being
purchased/constructed. Since no one could remember anything except that it
was a wood marker, the conversation or lack of intent (again) left that up
in the air. The last I heard, the grave was near the edge of the road in the
back - the road is part of the original subdivision & is still there.
whether the marker is still there someplace, lost in the brush or
disappeared, I do not know. the date you mention was never that long ago for
the grave we are talking about. It is interesting to know you have come up
with a real person & a date. Have you notified the Hanover Historical
Society? Helen Yeates does the grave stuff & may already have something in
either of the 2 books she has written.
Hope this helps.
Dianne

The book, "Old Homes of Hanover County" says that it is located on the west
side of Route 301 near the courthouse.

contained a wooden marker, now decayed, listing someone whose name was
indistinct as dying here in 1780."

have been buried there. Oak Knoll was inherited by his daughter-in-law Emma
Mettert, who was married to his son, Gideon Hudson Wingfield.
