Deane Mills,
In answer to your question below:
>Do you have on your maps any information on the land holdings of the FARRAR
>family in Henrico County in the early 17th century>?
>Also, do you have any information on who owned the tract of land that was
>known as MALVERN HILL in Henrico County?
I copied the material below from Cavaliers & Pioneers, v. 1, but am giving the
Patent Bk #, and page--in case you want to check them out through LVA's
marvelous digital images of the patents! http://image.vtls.com/collections/LO.html
William Farrar first owned land near Appomattox River. I haven't found the
patent for it, but [Patent Bk 1, pt 1, p. 414] Christopher Woodward received
a patent for 350 acres 8 Mar 1636, which was bounded N upon Appamatox R;
S into the main woods, E upon MR. WILLIAM FARRAR, & W
upon the winding river. Then [PB 1,pt 2, p. 469] Christopher patented 600
acres in Chas. Citty Co 24 Aug 1637, bounded N on Appamattox, S into the
woods, E on land LATELY BELONGING TO WILLIAM FARRAR, GENT, &
W on the winding river. [I think it included the 350 acre patent.] I'm not
sure who he sold it to, but think it must have been either Eppes or Poythress.
[Can anyone give the answer to this?]
On 11 June 1637 [PB 1, pt 1, p. 436] Wm Farrar, son & heir of Wm Farrar,
late of Henrico Co, dec'd, recd a patent for 2,000 acres in Henrico Co abutting
Ely. on Glebe land of Varina, Westerly to the bottome of ____ Island,
Southerly upon the maine river and Northerly into the woods. This was--and
still is--known as Farrar Island. It is at current Dutch Gap and the James
River now is cut off at the Gap, but when Wm Farrar patented it, it ran all
the way around the property. (That is the reason it says it is bounded Sly.
on the maine river. It is now bounded on the north by the James--at least
I think so as that is how it looks on the map. I have never been there.)
On 3 Oct 1664, [PB 5:376 & 377] Tho. Ligon & Capt Wm. Farrar received
two grants in partnership. The first, containing 375 acres, was on the N side
James R, beg at the Round aboute Slash [Cr] adj. Morgan Price & running
through another br of sd slash WNW . . . the second, containing 335 acres
25 poles, began on S side James R., in Mount My Lady field, against a place
where an old oven had stood, running NW by W to the Red Water Slash
& down the falling ground of Proctor's Cr.
Wm Farrar may have patented other tracts.
At the Virginia State Library, there are a series of maps in a manscript
collection which are WONDERFUL. [I found of their existence through
a reference in ''Adventurers of Purse & Person, Virginia 1607-1624/5."
by Virginia M. Meyer & John Frederick Dorman. Pub by Order of First
Families of Virginia, 1607-1624/5, The Dietz Press, Inc: Richmond,1987.
Anyone who is searching for early Virginia ancestors ought to own this
book.]
The reference was to a typescript book published by Simeon O. Coxe,
Jr. in 1964 that contained these maps, but I could not find a copy of the
book. Luckily Mr. Coxe's maps had been placed in the manuscript material
at the Virginia state library and Robert Clay, archivist at the library, was
able to point me to them.
To get back to the maps, they were compiled and drawn by Simeon O.
Coxe, Jr. The collection is a series of perhaps 12 maps in which he
shows the"Adventurers and Planters at "Arrowhattocks" in Henrico Co,
Virginia 1611-1665. He shows where the original patents were located
and also the changes of ownership of the various tracts over this 54 year
period. The maps are "professional" quality and I have found them to be
very accurate when I was studying any of the patents of which I had
knowledge. They show all (or most all) of the patentees from what is
now the boundary between Henrico & Charles City County / Pr
George County on BOTH sides of the James River up to near Almond
Creek (about 2 or 3 miles from Richmond).
On his 1657 [MAP # 8] he shows "Maborne Hills" as north from the land
of Richard Cocke (who owned "Bremo" at Curles and also 1,860 a. E & N of
Turkey Island Creek) , east of Thomas Ludwell's 961 acre tract called
"Timberslash" and also east of Maj. Wm. Harris's 450 acre tract called
"The Slashes". "Malborne Hills" is north and slightly east of "Curles".
