Kim - Timberlake was a common surname in James City County area - perhaps
that could lead your search to somewhere more specific in VA. Suggest you
check the James City Co. boards.

In the 1820 VA Census Index, I see the following Timberlakes listed below
[these census indexes are never entirely complete, so be sure to check the
actual census returns if you have narrowed your search down to a county to
assure a complete search]. There is no Thomas on this listing, but, as I
said, this does not mean he was not in VA somewhere. Or perhaps he moved
from VA before he was eligible to be counted in the census. You may in fact
see his father in the list below.

Here are the Timberlake heads of household who are listed in the
Richmond-to-James City County area. Perhaps some of these other given names
may be familiar to you and help you narrow your search? Perhaps some of
Thomas' siblings remained in VA when Thomas moved on?

Benjamin A. Timberlake, Hanover Co. pg. 53 [page in the actual census]
Chapman " pg. 77
David " pg. 53
David James City Co., pg. 117
Eliza New Kent Co., pg. 213A
Francis Henrico Co., pg. 97A
Francis Williamsburg City pg. 147
Henry King Wm. Co. pg 303A
Henry A. Hanover pg. 77
Henry S. Charles City Co., pg. 4
John " " pg. 11A
John New Kent Co., pg. 213A
Lin Henrico, pg 98
Martha Hanover, pg 81
Nathan Hanover, pg. 74
R.G.C. New Kent, pg. 213A
Reuben Hanover, pg. 79
Richard New Kent, pg 213A
Sarah Hanover pg. 74
William New Kent, pg 213A
William W. King William Co., pg 301A

Malcolm Harris in his book "Old New Kent Co." pages 858ff discuss the
'college lands' at William and Mary College in Williamsburg from which grants
of land were made to people in the 1700's. Pg. 862: "Lot No. 3: This tract
of 280 acres was leased to Richard Timberlake and lay between the lots of
Thomas Fox, David Lawson and William Thornton in 1790." "Lot No. 4: ......
in 1798 this lot [142 acres] was leased to Benjamin Timberlake and, in 1804,
Henry Timberlake acquired the lease from Benjamin Timberlake." "Lot No. 16:
This was a small lot of three acres which, in 1791, was leased to Henry
Timberlake and John Timberlake..........In 1793 the lease was made to Henry
Timberlake and Benjamin Timberlake..." "Lot No. 17: This lot was leased to
Henry and Benjamin Timberlake in 1791. It contained 305 acres of land and
from it was taken 127 ares which were sold to Timberlake and, in 1799, a new
lease was entered into with Henry Timberlake and Benjamin Timberlake......
[info on location follows]."

I suggest you also check the 1840 and 1830 VA census indexes for your family
members. I would also suggest that rather than try to substantiate a theory,
which can waste a lot of your time, just to follow where the records lead
you, by plodding back through the generations. How much research have you
done to date in VA for your family?

Good luck! Marge in VT

I am currently researching my 3rd great grandfather Thomas Timberlake. He
was born approx. 1807 somewhere in Virginia. He married a Katherine Teasley
(could possibly be Catherine Ormsby). She was born approx. 1809 also in
Virginia. They later moved to Greenup Co. Kentucky. I show them in Greenup
in a 1850 census. Thomas's oldest son Pleasant had supposedly taken Thomas
back to Virginia to be buried. I have had several family members researching
this along with me. Several factors have come up between talking with
several family members. It is said that we have Indian in our family. Also
that the name Richard keeps coming up. My theory is that somehow we are
linked with the Richard Timberlake - son of Henry , then son of the orginial
Francis Timberlake. I would love to have any kind of proof for this. I am
still trying to find out who the father of Thomas was. Once that is done I
believe I can link us all the back to England. Any help would truly by
appreciated.
Thanks
Kim
