Hi all,
Edith is very close.

The state of Virginia kept records on regsiters of deaths and births from
1853-1896, some personal info. No individual death certificates then. Alot of
deceased people on large pages in these old registers.

From 1897-June 13th of 1912 there were no state vital records kept. Some
counties and cities kept their own death records during that time including
Richmond city from 1902 and onward.

On June 14th of 1912 the state of Virginia started keeping individual
certificates of deaths and births. And those are to this day.

The only places to get state of Virginia death certificates are the Library
of Virginia in downntown Richmond on East Broad Street and the state of
Virginia office of vital records at the Willow Lawn Shopping Center off of
West Broad.

LVA has then on microfilms from June 14th, 1912 to Dec. 31, 1939 and they
have indexes until 1954. The index just for the year 1954 goes to surnames
beginning with the letter P before that it includes all surnames.

The only place to get death certificate all the way from June of 1912 to
today is the Virginia state office of vital records.

LDS does not have the death certificates. I know this for sure.

Perhaps they have the old death records.

LVA also has birth records on films from 1853-1896 with indexes for those.
Only about half of the deaths were reported from 1853-1896 and most of the
births but not all.

I believe that starting with the certificates in 1912 they were required ot
be reported.

As for marriages LVA also has marriages for all counties and cities on
registers on microfilms and individual licenses from some counties and cities
from 1853 to later on. The latter depends on the what they have on films for
that county or city.

Here is the link for the page on the Library of Virginia website about what
they have on vital statistics and such:
http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/vital/index.htm

I go there often and volunteer there once a month.

God bless,
Beth
