Hello,

I'm new to this list, and am seeking some information about the personal
floral gardener for President Jefferson DAVIS at the White House in
Richmond.

His name was Edward G. EGGELING, renowned florist from Germany, who had
been in Richmond for many years. He was married to a local gir named
Margaret BIGGAM....maybe around 1847 ? Is there anyone on this list
who has access to an index of Henrico County marriages? I'm trying to
find their exact date of marriage. The Eggelings had a floral shop on
Broad St. in Richmond, across from Richmond College.

I've already obtained a lot of information about Eggeling out of the
Davis papers and other sources. I even have a picture of him and his
wife standing in front of their floral shop.....although it's old and
very faint. Lot of interesting information about him. After the war,
and after Margaret's death (is there a way to find her death
information), he moved to St.Louis, MO where he also became a renowned
florist, and I happen to live on Eggeling Lane (in St.Louis), that was
named in his honor. In the 1870's, former President Davis visited him in
St.Louis, and gave him a cane, with their names inscribed on it, which is
still in the Eggeling family. I'm writing a biography about Eggeling for
a local history book.....so any extra information would be greatly
appreciated, and you would be used as a source, if that's okay.

Thanks so much, and I really look forward to hearing back from you all.

John Maurath
