I have been researching the FOX family of Highland County. Our FOX line was
originally located in that part of Bath Co that became Highland Co. Before
living in Bath County, I'm beginning to believe they fell out of the sky.

I have visited the courthouse at Monterey twice looking for documentation of
this family. The ladies in the Clerk's office were wonderful and very
helpful. If you write for a request of public records the Clerk's office will
look for the info, make a copy and mail it to you with a bill for the amount
you owe (50 cents per sheet). Personally I think that's great. Some
counties require you to mail a check first with no guarantee there are any
records and no refund if nothing is found.

You are correct about the public library having a large genealogy section.
They also have the local newspaper on microfiche back to about 1890, however,
they will not look any info up for you. You must go to the library and do
the research in person.

As for the Highland Co. website:
- I would like to see more local history, such as a list of all the churches
and who their ministers where and a list of all the cemeteries. I searched
for months for the final resting place of our FOX line, only to find after
locating other Fox descendants that they were buried in a private cemetery on
land that once belonged to the Fox family.
- How about a list of the merchants, lawyers, and business in Highland Co.
in the mid 1800s.
- Or a list of Marriages in Highland County from 1848 to 1900.
- Or a record of deaths in Highland County would also be great.
- Is anyone doing the 1850/70/80 census for Highland Co.?
These are just my thoughts. Myrt Smit
