Surname: Swindler, Swinler, Swingler
-------------------------

What we have on Swingler/Swindler is that earliest record shows will of
Henry Swingler in New Jersey, circa 1725. Next is marriage of Henry Swingler
(son) to Mary Clayton circa 1748 in Monmouth Co., NJ. This Henry turns
up in Loudoun Co. Va court and tax records starting around 1770 and name
changed to Swindler. His estate is probated in Loudoun Co. circa 1793.
We suspect at least six sons to account for a Joseph in Newberry Co., SC,
David in Morgantown, WVA, Henry in Fayette Co., Pa (my branch), Jonathan
(Henry's estate administrator) in Ky and Indiana, Samuel to Pa then to
Louisiana, and Rev. John with sons to Gallia Co., Oh, Rappahannock Co.,
Va, and Kanawha Co., WVA (your branch). Most of these sons also appear
in Loudoun Co. tax records circa 1770-1800. That's the accepted version
at this time, but the records are meager.

Jim Wichman's wife was Ruth Swindler. They, and Calvin Swindler of Utah,
did a lot of digging in mid 1980s for records up to about 1850/60. Both
are from Indiana group. Jim's "Swindler" data file is approaching 10,000
names. I have looked for census data to 1920 to help him along.

Would like to see what you have on your Swinler branch at my email address.
Perhaps just annotate references to people still living as "alive" with
no details. May I circulate to about 15 others interested in genealogy
of Swindler surname?

Am posting this reply on Loudoun Co. site for benefit of any others interested
in this unusual surname.
