Subject: [VALOUDOU-L] John Shearer, cabinet maker
For Joy Fulgham and others,
I have checked with the northern Virginia cabinet maker researcher and a
chance mention to an antique dealer who remembered the name of this Scots
Irish cabinet maker. I have only a small additional bit of information from
that of watching Antiques Roadshow's segment on this man there identified
with Loudoun County.
One of my sources mentioned Shepherdstown, the other Martinsburg--both now
West Virginia, at the time of this man's work at the turn of the 19th
century, in Virginia--the man who said Shepherdstown is a retired antique
dealer, had seen a few of the man's pieces over the years, and said that
vertical drawer pulls (as shown in the Las Vegas piece-- were a feature of
Shearer's work. He also remembered reading that Shearer had "died young".
The man who researches furniture makers remembers seeing a piece at auction
in Martinsburg, "a local piece attributed to John Shearer, a dropfront desk
with secret compartments, God Save the King written inside, and of no
particular distinction, that sold for $12,000 12 years ago."
That's the best I can do.
