In a previous message I discussed birth, death and marriage records
available in VA. In 1896 the state discontinued the requirement that births
and deaths be reported to the county or city. It remained that way until
June 1912. Starting June 1912, it became law that all births and deaths be
reported to the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Richmond. Copies of birth and
death certificates can be obtained from that office for a fee. Below I have
pasted the URL for their internet site that should answer all your questions.

A couple years ago the Library of VA obtained microfilm copies of these
death certificates starting in June 1912 and continuing I believe until at
least 1950. In order to locate the certificate, you must first find the
individual in a microfilm index that gives the certificate number, date of
death, and city or county of death. I do not know if these microfilm
records are available for inter-library loan.

Good luck.
