Subject: [VAMONTGO] land record question

I need help in understanding deeds in VA. The land I am referring to is in
Botetourt Co., but I assume the laws would be the same anywhere in VA in
this time frame. Since the list is so helpful, I'm turning to you for
advise.

In 1791, Michael bought 200 acres from the man who took out the original
patent on this land earlier that year. He paid 50 pounds and on rereading
the deed I see there is no mention of mortgage. In 1798 there is a court
record correcting the name of the man who sold the land to Michael. Then
when Michael sells this land, that deed says he purchased the land in 1801.
The land description is exactly the same as in 1791. He begins paying taxes
on the land in 1798.

At first I assumed a mortgage and the 1798 court record was the initial step
in clearing the mortgage, but when I found that he claims purchase in 1801,
I just couldn't figure out what was going on. Can anyone help? Thanks Barb
