Here are some pertinent quotes from Lyman Chalkley's CHRONICLES OF THE
Scotch-Irish Settlement IN VIRGINIA EXTRACTED FROM THE ORIGINAL COURT
RECORDS OF AUGUSTA COUNTY 1745-1800
AUGUSTA COUNTY COURT RECORDS.

I will preface my comments with the [EM] for Ed Marsh

ORDER BOOK No. II.
page 36
Page (63) Robert and Wm. Christian to lay out a road from Black James
Armstrong's to Wm. Long's mill,
thence to James Alexander's fence, with these workers: James
Armstrong, George Rutlidge, Thomas
Rutlidge, James Caldwell, James Armstrong. James Frain, William Robb,
John Christian, James Alexander,
John Black, John Wilson, Anthony Black, Wm. Wright, and Wm. and John
Robinson.

[EM] The Blacks and Christians mentioned here are the namesakes of
Blacksburg and Christiansburg. This is an order for one of the earliest
roads. I cannot (at this time) state the exact route of this path.

ORDER BOOK NO. III.
page 54
Page (328) Charles Campbell, Wm. Long, Joseph Love, John Wilson, Wm.
Wright, Anthony Black, James
Robinson and Patrick Campbell--clear and keep a road from Wm. Long's
mill to Charles Campbell's

ORDER BOOK NO. IX.
page 119
Page (251) Wm. Robinson, James Neeley and Wm. Bryans to view a road
from Vanse's by Inglis's Ferry
to Peak (Poak) Creek. Wm. Ward qualified deputy sheriff, to which
James Trimble dissented. Nicholas
Harplore, Paul Shaver and Jacob Wees, to view road on North Mill Creek
from the Upper Tract to the
County line below Jacob Peterson.

[EM] Inglis Ferry (Ingle's Ferry - present-day Radford) to Peak Creek is
the road that runs north of Claytor Lake, through Newbern, and out along
I-81.

ORDER BOOK No. XI.
page 135
Page (87) John Robinson and John Henderson appointed highway surveyors
from head of North Fork of
Roanoke to Capt. John Robinson's Mill.

[EM] Head of North Fork (of Roanoke River) lies just into Roanoke County
near Catawba. There is a low ridge where one crosses from the waters of
the north fork to those of Catawba creek. This passage was called "the
Indian Road" or "The Road Up Catawba" on old maps.

ORDER BOOK No. XI.
page 137
Page (219) John Robinson appointed surveyor of highway from his mill
by the Den to the County Road
leading to Warwick.

[EM] The "Den" is an area in the Ellet Valley - just down the mountain
from Blacksburg into the Roanoke Valley - where the Roanoke River makes
a sharp turn back northeastward. The branch of the river that flows into
the Roanoke from the south at that point is called Den Branch.
