Message Board Post:

I did some checking in the Montgomery Co, VA courthouse, and this is what I found (and didn't find) on Jesse Hall (1760-1848, NY>Montg. Co, VA):

I could not find a marriage for a Jesse Hall and Ann or Katherine Watterson dated 1798. There was a record for Jesse Hall Jr. and Ann Watterson, daughter of Thomas Watterson, dated 1 Feb 1825 (MC Marriage Register A:194).

There were two grantors deeds for Jesse Hall and wife Phebe:

Montgomery County Deed Book B p. 279, 3 Dec 1796, JESSE HALL & PHEBE HALL his wife to James Bryan, 253 acres by patent bearing date 27 March 1783, south branches of north fork of Roanoak River.

Montgomery County Deed Book D p. 486, 3 Oct 1807, JESSE HALL and his wife PHEBE of Montgomery County to Charles G. Lewis, 194 acres both sides south fork Roan oak adj. William Stapleton & Luke Muncy.

It looks like Jesse's wife Phebe may have lived longer that originally thought. Jesse was enumerated with a female over age 45 in the 1810 census (Jesse Hall 01101 - 01201). It looks like Phebe Wilbur Hall was the mother of all his children, including Charles b. 1800.

I checked a copy of "A Brief of Wills & Marriages in Montgomery and Fincastle Counties, Virginia" (Anne Lowry Worrell) at the VA Room at the Roanoke City library. The 12 Jan 1798 marriage for Jesse Hall and Ann Watterson was listed in the book, but the date had been underlined and there was a note in pencil saying "see corrections." A copy of the 1825 marriage bond for Jesse Hall Jr. and Ann Watterson had been bound into the back of the book. I assume this was the correction referred to. No note of who the correction was done by.

This marriage to Ann Watterson was also included in "Kegley's Virginia Frontier" p. 598. No source was given.

I checked a copy of Kegley's "Early Adventurers on the Western Waters vol. 2." Pages 136 & 137 list Montgomery County marriages for 1798 taken from MC microfilm reel #39 (Marriage Bonds 1796-1803) in the Library of VA. There was no mention of a Jesse Hall or Ann Watterson in this list.

"A Brief of Wills & Marriages in Montgomery and Fincastle Counties, Virginia" was originally published in 1932, six years before "Kegley's VA Frontier", so this is possibly the source Kegley used.

There was no 1798 marriage listed in Botetourt county marriage books in the VA Room. I thought this may be a possibility since "Kegley's VA Frontier" mentions these marriages as being "On south branch and north fork in early Botetourt County."

So where does the 12 Jan 1798 marriage in Kegley's VA Frontier p. 598, Jesse Hall & Ann Watterson, daughter of Thomas Watterson, fit in ?

It seems that this marriage date may have been an error. Has anyone ever seen a copy of the marriage bond with these names and this date? Even if this bond does exist, there is still the 1807 Deed naming Phebe as Jesse's wife.

Jesse Hall was supposed to have remarried after moving to Montgomery County. Does anyone have any evidence that any of the later MC marriages for a Jesse Hall refer to the Jesse Hall (1760-1848) who came from NY?

Pat Geary (Jewell Family Website) emailed me that there was a Jesse C. Hall and his wife Johanna who are buried in Hall's Church Cemetety in Ironto. I couldn't find a listing for them in the Hall's Church cemetery listing on the Montgomery Co genweb site, but there is a photo of the grave marker on the Jewell Family site and it is definitely a photo of Hall's Church Cemetery. Could this be the Jesse Hall Jr (son of Asa Hall) and wife (Joh)Anna Watterson married in 1825?

Jesse Hall's date of death is recorded in Montgomery Co, VA Court Order Book 31 p.183 dated 5 March 1849: "Jesse Hall, pensioner, died 2 October 1848, leaving children Freeburn Hall, David Hall, John Hall, Charles Hall, Susanna McNeely, Lydia Martin and Polly Rumburg." This is a different date than the one on his grave marker (28 Aug 1848) which was the date his will was written.

If anyone has a copy of the above metioned 1798 marriage bond, or knows where a copy can be found, please let me know.
