Re: Anselm Baileys of New Kent, Hanover, and Henrico Counties, VA

The name "Anselm Bailey" is a unique name which in the 1500's, 1600's, and
early 1700's may link Baileys of the same bloodline. As far as I can
research the name in the 1500's to late 1600's it is present only in England
and there only in Gloucestershire. And from the work of Joy Whaite (1994) it
appears all the Baileys in the 1500's, 1600's, and 1700's in England bearing
the name Anselm in IGI and other records can be traced back to two
Gloucestershire Bailey families, one in Elmore Parish and one in Wheatenhurst
Parish. These two families were probably related as the patriarch of the
Wheatenhurst family was baptized in Elmore.

In the late 1600's two Anselm Baileys immigrated from England to Virginia.
Both must have come from Gloucestershire, there was a 50/50 chance they were
related, and the first could have inspired the migration of the second. The
first "Ansell Bayly" sailed from Bristol, Gloucestershire and arrived in Isle
of Wight County about 1661. The restricted use of the name Anselm Bailey
continued in Virginia with his descendants south of the James River. Donna
Beers, who has extensively researched this Anselm Bailey and his descendants,
has data that shows only his descendants used the name Anselm Bailey in that
area. Other surnames south of the James used the given name "Anselm" but not
other Baileys. The second "Anselm Bayly" appeared in Virginia as a headright
of Henry Waring in 1689. This Anselm probably ended up in New Kent north of
the James River where his sponsor received land. The name Anselm Bailey
appears throughout 1700's and into the 1800's in the New Kent-Henrico-Hanover
county area. Based on usage of the name in England in Gloucestershire and in
Virginia south of the James I expect the Bailey families north of the James
River who used the name Anselm were related to each other.

To try to ascertain if the Anselms north of the James were related I compiled
all the information I could find on them in the expectation their
relationships to each other would be apparent. The scarcity though of
marriage and birth records and absence of Wills, because of lost records in
this area, made discovering relationships impossible. I hope there may be
copies of some of the lost data in the hands of individuals or other data
like Bibles that will shed light on these Anselms and their relationships. I
am in need of help.

Thomas Bailey

========New Kent-Hanover-Henrico Anselm Baileys========
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
[I.] Anselm Bailey (b. bef 1677 Gloucestershire, England - d. bef ?1702
probably New Kent Co., VA).
The name appears as headright of Henry Waring 1689 Oct 20 who received land
in New Kent. I assume Anselm ended up in New Kent because of the subsequent
appearance of the name there beginning in 1711. Anselm not in list of New
Kent Militia in 1702 so I presume dead by then.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
[II.] Anselm Bailey (bp 1711 Apr 11 New Kent Co., VA, - d. aft 1739)
Father was John Bailey, Jr. (b. bef 1686 - d. aft ?1724). Mother was
probably Mary Jackson (b. bef 1695 - d. ?1718 Feb 28). A John Bailey had
married Mary Jackson on 29 Dec 1709 in New Kent. Anselm probably had a
sister Tabitha (bp 1713 Apr 08 New Kent Co. - d. ????) and brother John (b.
1716 Oct 31, New Kent Co., VA - d. ????). Both were born to John and Mary
Bailey. Anselm's father may have remarried to an Ann __?__ (???Parke)
between 1718 and 1720 after Mary apparently died in 1718 and he had two more
sons William (bp 1720 Sep 04, New Kent Co., VA - d. ????, VA.) and Parke (b.
1724 Mar 06, New Kent Co., VA. - d. aft ?1791 probably New Kent Co., VA) and
another daughter Lucy (b. 1722 Nov 27, New Kent Co., VA - d. ????). Anselm
most likely married an Ann __?__ (b. bef 1623 - d. aft 1739) before 1739 as a
John Bailey was born 1739 Jun 18 to an Anselm and Ann Bailey.

The same names above are also associated later in time with the name Anselm
suggesting these people have a kinship. In the 1791 New Kent Tax List a
Parke Bailey, I assume the foregoing Parke, had "Ansalem Bailey" over age 16
listed with him. Unless this is a new Anselm there are three Anselms he
could be, (1.) this Anselm, Parke's ?half-brother, (2.) "[IVa.] Anselm"
discussed below and (3.) "[V.] Anselm" also discussed below. In 1833 and
1835 testifying at a RW land warrant hearing for a John Bailey [may be son of
Anselm and Ann] of New Kent were Anselm Bailey [listed in 1833], Anselm
Bailey Jr., [listed in 1835] (Anselm and Anselm Jr. may be the same person
unclear and if they are or aren't one is "[IVa.] Anselm" discussed below),
William Bailey, Parke Bailey, Lucy Bailey [married to John Boswell] Tabitha
Bailey (d. on or bef 1834 Jul 31) [married to William Gilliam], and a Nancy
Bailey. Not the people in the previous paragraph as they would be over a 100
years old but more than likely descendants of the people above. They were
identified as next-of-kin, heirs and distributees of John Bailey [1st VA],
Charles Bailey [2nd VA Artillery], and Thomas Barnes [1st VA.]. The latter
two from New Kent were also seeking land bounty for war service at the same
hearings and were apparently related to those testifying. "[IVa.] Anselm"
indicated he grew up with John Bailey but not that he was related to him.

John Bailey, Jr.'s father may have been the John Bailey in St. Peter Register
who had son Edward baptized between 1677 and 1699. He also baptized another
son, name unreadable between 1677 and 1699. This could have been John, Jr.
John may have been dead by 1702 not listed in New Kent Militia but John Jr.
is. John Bailey, Jr. could also be son of "[I.] Anselm".
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
[III.] Anselm Bailey (b. bef 1747 - d. aft 1771)
The name appears in the St. Paul's Vestry Book Hanover County twice. On 1763
Nov 30 Anselm was paid for keeping ?his daughter or an orphan, unclear to me.
The second entry indicated Anselm will be processioned 1771 Nov 12. No
other information on this Anselm. If not a new Anselm the only Anselm he
could possibly be from those discussed above and below would be "[II.]
Anselm" baptized in 1711.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
[IVa.] Anselm Bailey (b. 1758 Jul 17, New Kent Co., VA - d. ?1843 Feb 15
Henrico Co., VA)
Anselm's father was Samuel Bailey (b. bef 1740 - d. bet ?1782-1791) and his
mother Judith __?__ (b. bef 1740 - d. aft ?1791). Marriage was before 1756.
No evidence as to who Samuel's father was but logical candidates are "[II.]
Anselm" or one of his three brothers - John, William or Parke. Samuel may
have died between 1782 and 1791. The 1790 Federal Census (reconstructed from
1782, 1783, 1784 and 1785 state tax records) lists a Samuel with 6 white
persons. In the 1791 New Kent Land Tax List we have a Judith Bailey listed,
which I assume is because she was now head of a household. Samuel must have
died. Anselm had an older brother James (b. 29 Jun 1756 New Kent Co., VA -
d. ????). With Samuel having 6 white souls listed he may have had more
children than just James and Anselm.

Anselm married about 1813 probably in New Kent Susannah __?__ (b. bet
1791-1793 - d. aft 1830 & bef ?1843) and by 1827 had seven children with her.
Only children names known are Rebecca (b. bet 1813-1815 probably Hanover
Co., VA), Martha (b. bet 1815-1817 probably Hanover Co., VA), and Anselm [may
be Anselm Justice .] (b. bet 1818-1820 probably New Kent Co., VA).
Considering Anselm's age this could be a second marriage for Anselm and a
second set of children. That seems to be borne out at what presumably is
this Anselm's death in 1843. At death his children were reported as James,
Samuel, Sarah, Elizabeth and William and no widow. All were indicated to be
of legal age. Sarah was married to William Young and Elizabeth was married
to a Matthew Higgins. This Matthew Higgins may be the same Matthew Higgins
who appraised Anselm's property in 1820 when he reapplied for his RW pension.
That Matthew probably would have been born before 1800 and if this is him
and his wife was this Elizabeth and she is the same age range it supports the
idea she is a child from an earlier marriage, before 1800, of Anselm's. At
a RW pension hearing in 1820 Anselm only made mention of his children with
Susannah also implying any children from a first marriage were grown or dead.
By the way Matthew's cousin Foster Higgins, Jr married a Rebecca Bailey in
1827 but seems unlikely the Rebecca above as she would have been only
thirteen. No indication of what happened to Anselm's second wife Susannah
and their children except for may be Anselm. Susannah would have been about
51 when Anselm died.

[IVb.] Anselm [?J.] Bailey (b. abt 1819 probably New Kent Co., VA - d. 1861
at Yorktown, VA). He was probably son of "[IVa.] Anselm" and Susannah __?__.

Anselm married Lucy Ann Wright (b. 1832, VA - d. ????) on 25 Dec 1852 in New
Kent Co., VA. Anselm and Lucy had children Augustine W. Bailey (b. 1853
probably New Kent Co., VA), Delaware Allen Bailey (b. 1856 New Kent Co., VA),
Anna Marsh Bailey (b. 1859 probably New Kent Co., VA.), and Justus Collier
Bailey (b. 1861 New Kent Co., VA).
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
[V.] Anselm Bailey (b. bet 1774-1776 probably New Kent Co., VA - d. bet
1850-1860)
No indication of parents but some candidates are Parke Bailey discussed above
who had an Anselm with him in 1791, James Bailey (b. 29 Jun 1756) above
brother of "[IVa.] Anselm" and "[IVa.] Anselm" himself from an even earlier
marriage. In the 1810 Federal census of New Kent, Hanover and Henrico only
two Anselms are listed, both in New Kent, an Anselm Jr. and an Anselm Sr.
Based on timelines these could only be "[IVa.] Anselm" and [V.] Anselm",
father and son?

Anselm was married to Martha __?__ (b. bet 1782-1784 - d. aft 1850) in 1850.
Marriage was probably between 1825 and 1850. In 1850 Anselm and Martha and
children Martha (b. bet 1825-1827), Ballard D. (b. bet 1827-1829) and Mary W.
(b. bet 1830-1832) were living in New Kent. If Anselm's and Martha's
children Martha would have been 41-45, 43-47 and 46-50 years old when each
was born. These could be children from a previous marriage of Anselm. From
Anselm's age his marriage to Martha could be a second or even a third
marriage. Anselm not in 1860 census so I assume dead between 1850 and 1860.
Could this Anselm also be "[VI.] Anselm" below and he was married to Lucy
__?__ before Martha?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
[VI.] Anselm Bailey (b. bef 1816 probably New Kent Co., VA - d. aft 1832)
This Anselm might be "[V.] Anselm" in a previous marriage. Son Robert below
born the same time frame as children listed with previous Anselm, "[V.]
Anselm". Seems less likely this could be the next Anselm "[VII.] Anselm" in
an earlier marriage. They appear separated by 2 and probably at least 4
years in date of birth. No indication of parents unless Robert was Anselm's
father's name.

Anselm married Lucy __?__ before 1832 and apparently lived in New Kent Co.
Anselm and Lucy had a son Robert (b. 1831-1833 New Kent Co., VA) and daughter
Delia Ann (b. ????). Robert married Margaret Reddy (b. bet 1848-1850
Ireland) on 9 Jul 1873 in Henrico Co., VA. Based on Robert's age may be a
second marriage for him. Delia Ann married __?__ Oakly of Richmond on 22 Oct
1863 in Henrico Co., VA. __?__ Oakly was son of Fleming Oakly and Susan
__?__. Delia subsequently married Nelson Overly (b. ?Ohio) on 26 Sep 1867 in
Henrico Co., VA.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
[VII.] Anselm Bailey (b. bet 1817-1819 - d. aft 1860)
Anselm was married to Mary J. __?__ (b. bet 1835-1837). Anselm must have
married Mary J. __?__ between 1851-1860 based on her age. This could be a
second marriage for Anselm. In 1860 Anselm was a carpenter living in Henrico
Co. with wife Mary J., unidentified children, and a Mary Wade age 50,
(??mother-in-law). Speculation but Anselm may have been a twin as an Absolom
(b. bet 1817-1819 New Kent Co., VA ) born the same year to a John Bailey. If
so Anselm's parents would be John Bailey and Susan __?__. Absolom, a
widower, married Mary J. Hardin (b. bet 1835-1837 Henrico Co., VA) on 19 Jan
1858 in Henrico Co. Absolom's first wife unknown. Mary J. Hardin was
daughter of Henry Hardin and Ann__?__.
