New River Obituaries
DANIEL, Hazel Shaver, 88, of Blacksburg, departed this life to a greater
life with her Lord on Wednesday, March 14, 2001. She was preceded in death
by her beloved husband, Charles Lewis Daniel. She is survived by her son,
Ron and her daughter-in-law, Cheryl; and her cherished granddaughter, Jennie
of Blacksburg. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Dunn of
Roanoke and Mrs. Ruth Ridgeway of Wirtz; and brother, Lewis Shaver of
Roanoke. Mrs. Daniel was a lifelong member of the Methodist church.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Daniel was devoted to her church, her family and
her home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2001 at
Oakey's North Chapel, 6732 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, Va. with Rev. Don
Roberts officiating. The interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakey's North
Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made
to the God's Shelter Fund of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church,
Blacksburg, Va.
DICKERSON, Anna Ellen Martin, 82, of Shawsville, passed away Wednesday,
March 14, 2001 at Richfield Nursing Center, Salem. A lifetime resident of
Montgomery County she was born June 3, 1918, the daughter of the late Walter
J. and Elizabeth Argabright Martin. Preceded in death by husband, Riley
Tazwell "Taz" Dickerson, she is survived by two sons, Watson L. Dickerson,
Fuquay Varina, N.C., Marshall C. Dickerson and daughter-in-law, Donna Easton
Dickerson, Vinton, Va.; three daughters, Betty Sowder and son-in-law, James
L. Sowder, Mechanicsville, Va., Jeanette H. Graham and son-in-law, Trubie I.
Graham, Edna D. Conner, all of Shawsville, Va.; eight grandchildren, Johanna
D. Sowder, Mechanicsville, Va., Nathan L. Sowder and wife, Jeanna, Aylett,
Va., Aaron R. Hale and wife, Donna, Spring Hill, Fla., Sharon H. Maxey and
husband, Tony L. Maxey, Glen Arlis Conner, Jr., all of Shawsville, Robert D.
Dickerson and wife, Amelia, Pittsboro, N.C., Teresa D. Morton and husband,
David, Wilmington of North Carolina, Steven Dickerson and wife, Hope, Hardy,
Va.; thirteen great-grandchildren, Kayla Sowder, Jessica Sowder, Hunter
Sowder, Arlen Riley Hale, Brandy Miles and Shawn Biller, Jennifer, Rhonda,
Victoria Dickerson, Belle and Grant Dickerson; two
great-great-grandchildren, Austin Biller, David Miles, III; one
sister-in-law, Mrs. Pauline D. Conner, Salem, Va.; one brother-in-law,
Woodie L. Dickerson and wife, Magdalene, Princeton, W.Va. The family wishes
to give their special thanks to Pauline Conner for her continued love and
support. Also express our deep appreciation to the home care providers,
Richfield Nursing Center Staff, Gentle Shepherd Hospice and the staff at
Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March
17, 2001 in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Willie Yates
with interment to follow in Piedmont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests memorials be made to the Shawsville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box
14, Shawsville, Va. 24162. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m.
Friday evening at the Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg, Va.
DUNCAN, George William, 68, of Christiansburg, died Thursday, March 15,
2001. Arrangements by Horne Funeral Service.
HALE, Marjorie McClanahan, 68, of Elliston, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001
at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born April 25, 1932 at Grundy, Va., a
daughter of James A. McClanahan and Lula Stevenson McClanahan. Marjorie
graduated from Grundy High School in 1951 and married Herbert H. (Jim) Hale
in 1952. They owned and operated Hale's Restaurant in Shawsville for 34
years. Marjorie was a member of Big Spring Baptist Church for many years.
Marjorie had a rare gift for friendship, her friendships spanned generations
and lasted decades. The sorrow her friends feel at her passing is a tribute
to the compassion, generosity, and love she gave so selflessly. Marjorie
will be remembered as a loyal wife, a loving mother and grandmother, a
devoted sister, and a faithful friend. In addition to her parents, Marjorie
was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford McClanahan, Edward
McClanahan, and Curtis McClanahan. Survivors include two sons and
daughters-in-law, Gary and Cindy Hale of Elliston, David and Sharon Hale of
Elliston; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Doug Conner of Blacksburg;
granddaughters, Maria, Olivia, and Amber Hale of Elliston, Lindsay Hale of
Elliston, Amara and Rowan Conner, Blacksburg; stepdaughter, Emily Kessinger
of Blacksburg; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruby and George Ling of Floyd,
Daphine and Don Davis of Roanoke, Kitty and Ron Rakes of Shawsville; a
brother, Dave McClanahan of Floyd; brother and sister-in-law, L.C. and Susie
McClanahan of Lexington, N.C.; sister-in-law, Dolly McClanahan of Florida.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2001 at Big
Spring Baptist Church, Elliston, with Rev. Kenneth D. Gray and Rev. Steve
Sholar officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The
family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the
funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem.
MEREDITH, R. O., (Sonny), 66, of Pembroke, died Thursday, March 1, 2001 in
Cushing, Oklahoma. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, March 17,
2001 at 11 a.m. in Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead. Notice placed by
Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke.
St.CLAIR, Etta Dowdy, (Frankie), 72, of Elliston, passed away Thursday,
March 15, 2001. She was the beloved wife of James Robert "Bob" St.Clair.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Lee St.Clair; sister and brother-in-law,
Shelby and Herman Hill; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Doris Dowdy;
special niece, Jeannie Hill; also a number of other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon Saturday, March 17, 2001 at Lotz
Salem Chapel, with the Rev. Jack Bailey and the Rev. Thomas Clay
officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family
will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem.
VEST, Melba Myers, 71, of Pembroke, formerly of Roanoke, died Tuesday, March
13, 2001 in Blacksburg. She was the wife of John C. Vest, Jr., daughter of
Lulie M. Dowdy, mother of Kenneth and James Myers and Susan McDaniel, sister
of Janet Hannabass, Emory, Jr. and Tommy Dowdy. Funeral services were
conducted Thursday, March 15, 2001 at the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke,
with burial in the Stinson Cemetery, White Gate.
