Well, there's a coincidence. My brake cable almost snapped near the
bottom of Bear Road - and of course while comfortably exceeding the
speed limit - fortunately as I neared the bottom I heard, then saw, it
go one thread at a time. I did manage to stop - there was traffic - with
only a single thread of the Bowden remaining between me and strawberry
jam.

Couldn't afford preventative maintenance in those days.
