I used to walk past Allen West every day on my way to
junior school. A lady tenant in our house worked
there, always wearing that kerchief (babushka?) around
her head that tied in the front and was worn to stop
machine-hair entanglement. One time Jerry bombers
dropped three close together but they landed quite
some distance from Allen West. We scavenged for
shrapnel of which thre was plenty. On another
occasion, a bomber was shot down and the big buzz of
the day was that one of the crew who parachuted out
was impaled on one of Allen West's railings although I
never saw it. A stray aicraft bullet came through one
of our school windows once. We also lost a class
member to night bombing.
So often on our way to school we would see the
contrails of high altitude dogfights. It's hard to
believe it all actually happened.
