Referring to Priest Mountain [named after a person, William Priest, who was
killed by Indians at Elk Garden Fort in 1778] which today bears the name,Webb
Mountain, after a later land owner.
The coordinates shown by Canie Litton[a male person] depicts the location of
an orginal,HOUSE,with a circular lane, from a road in the hollow [rte 603] to
the house on top of a high hill [try driving a modern automobile up there]
which gave John Litton Sr. a view of the surrounding properties he owned
approx. 300 acres. The other coordinates depicts the location of John Litton
Sr private cemetery,LITTON HILL CEMETERY, far below his Litton Hill
plantation House, also shown is a road leading from the house to the
cemetery. When viewing the USCG quad maps {Elk Garden} it is suggested one
make use of a high powered magnifying glass.
Gary Price's comments on the area are well written, but in the Litton Hill
situation, some errors have been reported.
The first USCG map was flown in 1882 of the Elk Garden Virginia area, and
contains the name of the mountain as "Priest Mountain" and the locality as
"Litton Hill" which was an early post office, so named by the postal service.
as the area grew in population, the post office was made in the new town of
Lebanon, VA. which was first platted in 1818, John W. Litton Sr was a
purchaser of one of the lots in 1818.
