Sounds as if you have two completely lines. I am researching Thomas Vass,
born in King and Queen County, VA in 1737. He appears to have been part of a
family named Vause, pronounced Voss, and spelled Vass. The name Reuben
appears in this family. Your Reuben could have been part of that family.
Mike Marshall has posted quite a lot of information on GenForum on these
people, who were in Essex and surrounding counties in VA.
