Hello Ralph...
Please rethink this set of candidates.....you need to realize that Philip
St. George Cocke lived in Powhatan county near his fathers plantation in
Fluvanna county and not in Southwark parish. Yes they inherited Four Mile
Tree, but it was not their principle......
Richard A. Cocke and MAR his wife show up repeatedly in Surry county
censuses; they also show up on the vital statistics films for Surry county
FHL# 0034153 (I believe this # is correct, but double check it on the Family
History Catalog at http://www.familysearch.org .
Peyton also shows up in further records.
Prince George county may also help you, not sure tho'.
Richards parentage so far is still a mystery to me, if you find it before I
do, let me know the answer, ok???
Don't forget that Cocke(s) was also spelled Cock(s) and Cox, being legally
required to be Cox at a point either just before or after the civil war, as
I was told, seems ridiculous, and many still used the old spellings. Some
even went with Cook(e) or were misspelled that way or misread, so use
soundex where you can for c-200 and c220 to help ferret out the odd ones.
Cox was mistaken for Coy also.
The Virginia State Library now has the R. Bolling Batte papers online, they
are invaluable and I have not scratched the surface of them yet.
http://www.image.vtls.com/collections/BA.html will get you to the Lib of Va
digital collections and the index you need. ( OR the long way
http://www.lva.lib.va.us/dlp/index.htm then to electronic card indexs, then
personal papers, then genealogical and R. Bolling Batte).
