JOHN HUNT MORGAN IS ELABORATELY CELEBRATED - JANUARY 8, 1864
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Ever on the prowl for opportunities to attack and to destroy
federal military positions, John Hunt Morgan found himself
surrounded and eventually captured in late 1863.

After weeks in federal prisons in Ohio, Morgan and a number
of other Confederates managed to escape from their captors.

News of their escape eventually reached Confederate military
command in Richmond.

Following this announcement of his escape, many military of-
ficials begin to rally for this new southern hero. Plans for
a celebration begin to formulate, and the government of the
Confederate States of America, decides that John Hunt Morgan
should be feted.

On January 8th, 1864 Richmond is charged with the heroics of
this true southern raider. Celebrative festivals continue in
many parts of the city for John Hunt Morgan.
