CONFEDERATES FIGHT VALIANTLY AT RICH MOUNTAIN JULY ELEVENTH 1861

On the 11th of July in 1861, the Confederate forces were working
diligently to defend the western mountains of Virginia. One piv-
ital point they wanted to control was Rich Mountain. This mount-
ain was high above the tiny community of Beverly.

On the 11th, General Rosecrans had opened the road to Beverly in
Virginia. He moves onto attack these southerners defending their
mountaintop position. By the end of the day, they've pulled back
to other positions in the mountains. Rich Mountain falls to con-
trol of the union.

General Garnett too had evacuated their posts and headed for the
Cheat River Valley. Others move onto their Laurel Mountain post.
Southern losses were never recorded' for these battles. Federals
lose twelve men killed with another 49 wounded in these actions.

Can anyone report on this mountaintop battlefield preservation?

Did anyone have an ancestor who fought at Rich Mountain?
