They are films of the vital records INDEX compiled from information sent in
by town clerks long after the fact - after 1850, I think - they contain all
of the information that was in the town records for the particular event.
However, some town clerks seem not to have done a thorough job, so checking
the actual town records (also available on microfilm) is worthwhile. Some
are indexed and some are not.
With the early marriage records, often the town records contained only the
name of the bride and groom and the marriage date. Similarly, birth and
death records contained sketchy information. Only in the late 1800's do we
see reliably the kind of information we think of today as being on such a
certificate.
Also -- you can purchase copies of these microfilms from Public Records. I
do not know the cost

Are these films you are discussing the films of the cards that were made to
put into files long ago? I saw such a film at the New England Historical
Genealogical Society Library a couple of years ago. The problem was that
not
all the information from the marriage record I was looking at was there --
whether it was on the original or not, I do not know. It was for Deborah
Davis and William Boon who married in Wells, VT in about 1809 as I recall. I
very much wanted to know where he was from, his parents' names, etc, but
they
were not there. Since I live in Calif. and was only in Boston for a couple
of days, I was not able to search further. If anyone can find out more, I
would love to have the info.
