Hi all,
I am enjoying the Via list serve and all of the information that has
been provided.
I am a descendent of Daniel Maupin and Margaret Via. The Maupin history
has been documented in a book by Dorothy Maupin Shaffett. She has done an
excellent job of dispelling many of the myths surrounding the Maupin family
that had been perpetuated by previous researchers. The article from VA
Magazine of History contains some incorrect information.
Gabriel and Marie Maupin had several children that did not survive until
adulthood. Daniel, was born in 1700 and was older than Gabriel, who was
born in Virginia. The daughter Mary died in her twenties with no issue.
There also is little proof that the Maupins married into the Spencer family
of nobility. Gabriel (1) and Marie Maupin were married at age 25 around
1695. They could not have had a son Gabriel that would have been marriage
age in 1700.
I have joined this list to seek information on the maternal lines of my
Maupin history. Margaret Via is my connection.
Hopefully this will help dispell the past research which was not
neccessarily based on factual documents.
