AUGUSTA SPRINGS --- Leonard Oliver Via, 72, of Augusta Springs died Friday (Jan. 3 1986) at King's Daughters' Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Fordwick, Va., Oct 5, 1913, a son of Oliver L. and Addie Robertson.
Mr. Via was very active in Augusta County. He served on the Augusta County Welfare Board and was fire chief of the Augusta Springs Volunteer Fire Department for more than 20 years. He was also a member of the Augusta Springs Community Association and served as a trustee of that organization.
He was a charter member of the Craigsville Lions Club and a former president of the Augusta Springs Ruritan Club and also a life member of the Augusta County Firemens Association.
Mr. Via was a member of the Augusta Springs United Methodist Church and served as a Bible teacher and a lay leader at the church.
Mr. Via was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mary Eloise Harlow, in 1984.
He is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Via Powers of Staunton and Reefa Via Dudley of Goshen; two brothers, Glennie F. Via of Abingdon and Alton C. Via of Richmond; one sister, C. Jean Malcolm of Craigsville, and three grandchildren, Barry C. Powers of Staunton, Anthony Wayne Kirby and Mandy Wynette Kirby, both of Goshen.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, Jan 5, at the Sensabaugh and Zimmerman Funeral Home at 2 p.m. and will be officiated by the Reverends Albert Schrader, William Garber, Harley Bender and Sara Hudson.
Interment will be in the Craigsville Community Memorial Cemetery.
Active pallbearers are William Puffenbarger, John Goff, Richard Kirby, George Montgomery; Herman McLain and David Berry.
Honorary pallbearers will be Grover Mitchell, Tony Limbo, Harvey Goff, Franklin Fridley, Ernest Fridley, Justinian Daniel, Wine Bazzerea, Zirkle Wright, Richard Wilson, Charles Lohr, Hugh Ralston, Rudolph Shaver, Dr. Kirtner Johnson, Dr. John Hiner Guss, Dr. Leon Lenker, William T. Trainum, William (Billy) Via, Marshall Friedley, Wallace Fridley, Russell Flint, Sammie Cale, Gratton Cale, Edward J. Wolanski and Patrick H. Trainum.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 tonight at the funeral home and also at the residences of Mr. Via's daughters, Mrs. Powers of 316 Hanover St., Staunton, or at Mrs. Dudley's in Goshen.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Sensabaugh and Zimmerman Funeral Home.
