Hello Teresa, my dad was close to a set of brothers from Surry and Yadkin Counties in North Carolina. Their names were James and Mac Chandler. I am not sure how you would trace them? It is possible they came from Surry Co, NC as did my dad. There was more than those 2 brothers but I did not know them. It was always told they were a rowdy bunc and their dad was too., maybe some type of court records would show something. Mac and James both died in Yadkin Co, NC. My dad passed this past April, but I could ask my uncle for a little more info if you would like? Just let me know.
Blessings, Yvonne

I am still tracking down my Chandler ancestors and keep running into walls at every turn.
Since I have exhausted the Chandler lines in Accomack and Northampton, I've been looking to Gloucester and other Tidewater Counties.? Each County I have looked at has Chandler's that have been researched out, but none of them connect with mine.
I have been told to look to the Cherokee, as there are Chandler's there.? But why would they have moved north and east, instead of west as so many of The People did?
I have found a Chandler in Halifax County, VA (yes I know, not Tidewater) who was in trouble with the law for not naming tithables because they were "mullato" in some "Indian Records", but have not been able to track him further.? Would they not have moved south and or west?
The earliest Chandlers that I can most definately prove are my ancestors were born between 1800 and 1810, either in Delaware or Virginia.? One of them moved on to Ohio, then Indiana between 1831 and 1840.? The other two (these were brothers) stayed behind.? One branch (mine) speaks of the Indian blood while the other line is either mum or ignorant of their heritage.
Would anyone have any ideas on how to proceed from here?? I need more access to Virginia records, but that is difficult when I work full-time and live in Delaware.? Is there a website that allows such access?? Or am I stuck with hoping that abstracts of wills, deeds, et al. are available for purchase?
One thing I do know, the Chandler who came to Jamestown is not an ancestor.? His line has been documented by several people and it simply does not connect with mine.
There has been a rumor brought to me by a cousin who says that there was a name change because of problems with the law.? Other than taking on Christinized names to get along with the Europeans, would a name change be a possiblity to avoid knowledge of heritage?
I appreciate any and all sound, reasonable insight and help with these questions.
Thank you,
Teresa A. Derrickson
nee Chandler
