Hi Jan, thanks for this.......this is most interesting.......so you think
ALL these petitioners were soldiers of the REV WAR???

my 4x grandfather and his brother were too YOUNG and were not in the RW, but
I know its them that signed it because its their handwriting and they are
the only SMEATHERS there are.
William and James.
So why do you think they were there?
I have been told they or at least William helped to build Ft Hartford which
is today of course in Ohio Co KY, and there is a historical marker for him
doing this in front of the Hartford Museum.
I am also told before that he helped to build another fort called then
Smeathers Station later known as Vienna or Fort at the Falls of the Ohio. I
am thinking prehaps this is where they were at the Falls of the Ohio maybe
when this petition was written. Prehaps because they were helping to build
this fort/settlement that is why they were there? I believe prior to that
they had come from Pennsylvania as DNA points to their 5x gf being in that
area. Also by 1790 I know William was already md abt 2 yrs because his first
son was born 1789 and he is documentated. One reason I am so interested, is
I have been unable to find a marr rec for William and his wife and was
thinking after reading this prehaps I need to check out Lincoln Co KY [I
guess its KY now]. This is one area I've yet to explore. thanks much for
your response. Nena

Much discussion is made over the Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia border
issues.
In 1790 all land to the west of Virginia to the Mississippi River belonged
to Virginia. It appears to me that this James Rood Robertson was
transcribing this petition he located (I am assuming it is in a
book published much later).

These inhabitants of the Reserved Lands (reserved by the government to
reward soldiers of the Revolution) are requesting (petitioning)
