Very good Paula ,,,,, cross our fingers, we may be getting somewhere now.
FYI : I rarely get involved with OE questions posted to this list. In case you didn't know it, there is a list just for OE
problems at .

Now, back at the ranch.
What we are going to do is force OE to rewrite its' default font settings.
I will give you several procedures ,,, go from one procedure to the next only if the problem is not resolved.

Procedure A:
1. Go to: Tools / Options / Read tab / Fonts button ,,,, in the Font Size: window, change whatever is in there to
another size ,,, click on the "Set as Default" button ,,, OK all the way out ,,, shut down OE and restart ,,, Test OE for
the problem.

Procedure B:
1. Go to: Tools / Options / Read tab / Fonts button ,,,, Change to a different font in the "Proportional Font" and
"Fix-width Font" windows ,,,, click on the "Set as Default" button ,,, OK all the way out ,,, shut down OE and restart ,,,
Test OE for the problem.

Procedure C:
1. Go to: Tools / Options / Read tab / Fonts button ,,,, in the large upper window, switch from "Western" to "Universal
Alphabet" ,,,, set "Encoding:" to "Unicode (UTF-8)" ,,, change all the other windows to a setting other than what you have
already tried. ,,,, OK all the way out ,,, shut down OE and restart ,,, Test OE for the problem.

Where you end up when the dust settles depends on the results from the tests above, so will wait for that. Keep excellent
notes on all tests, details are very important ,,, after all, all us out here are working entirely and completely blind.

If push come to shove, I would suggest you set up a new Identity ,,, if it works OK then Import all your "now" data &
Address book ,,,, then delete the Identity you are now using.
The reason for doing this is when a new Identity is set up a brand new installation of OE is installed for that
Identity which is separate from the original installation of OE ,,, which is why each Identity can have its' own address
book, folders and sub-structure.
As a matter of fact, it is recommended by experts on OE that all new installations of OE NOT use the default Identity
set up by OE (which is named "Main Identity") ,,,, the very first thing that should be done when OE is first installed is
to create an individual Identity for yourself and then start customizing and "adding to". ,, then delete the "Main
Identity" .
The reason for this is because when the "Main Identity" is created its' values are stored in the "Main Identity" part
of the registry and the values stored are "bare bones" and intended only to get you started ,,,, but when an individual
Identity is created its' values & parameters are stored in an entirely different part of the registry and are much more
complete ,,, which is a great asset when backing up folders, manipulating address books, cloning your OE to another
computer, etc., ect. ,,, in other words, it is MUCH more stable and less susceptible to "glitches" and corruption.

Sorry about this dissertation about OE on this VIRUS list ,,,, sometimes just don't know when to stop.
Good luck
Bob Hays
